About Dustin Leaney

From Rainforests to Regional Architect

Architect Bellingen, Dustin Leaney Homes & Architecture

I’m Dustin Leaney, Principal Architect of Dustin Leaney Homes & Architecture.

My path into architecture began in the rainforests of Far North Queensland. Growing up surrounded by nature’s cycles — the wet season rains and floods, cyclones, the dry season’s not so dry humidity, cane fires, box jelly fish, and rainforests — Such unique environs, all providing a deep, intuitive understanding of how buildings should work with the environment, not against it.

From a young age, I was also fascinated by technology. My introduction to the VIC 20, Commodore 64, and later the Amiga 500 taught me BASIC programming. That early foundation in logic and systems would later become invaluable when I learned Geometric Description Language (GDL) in ArchiCAD — allowing me to bring complex designs to life in 3D.

I come from a building design background. Working alongside my father from a very young age taught me the realities of construction and building design. Straight out of high school, I was already working on award-winning projects — a foundation that set the tone for my career as a second-generation designer.

At university, I received the William Edmund Kemp Award for the highest grade average across all subjects. While studying, I also worked as the IT manager for several architectural practices. This dual experience — design and technology — became a defining strength. Today, I use advanced 3D modelling and visualisation to help clients truly understand how their home will feel, how light moves through the spaces, and how the building connects to the outdoors in every season.

Since university and establishing Dustin Leaney Homes & Architecture around 2010, I have won awards for the Tallwoods Chapel of Light, the Butterfly Beach House, and Arcadia (a true net-zero carbon house). However, each house I design is an award winner for me because it achieves my client’s goals and is designed to suit their specific site. Every single home I design has a feature or purpose that is above and beyond the typical suburban project home.

My approach to architecture is also shaped by deeper influences. Studies in Eastern philosophy — Confucianism, Buddhism, and especially Taoism — along with my long-term practice of Kung Fu, have formed my moral compass. They taught me the importance of humility, compassion, discipline, and working in harmony with nature. These values guide how I treat every client: with respect, honesty, and genuine care.

My wife and family are central to who I am. Raising a family through challenging times gave me real insight into what homes actually need — not just physically, but emotionally — to help families survive and thrive.

Today, I bring all of this together — technical skill, environmental awareness, creative problem-solving, and a deep respect for people — to help clients on the Mid North Coast create buildings that are elegant, practical, affordable, and truly meaningful.

I’m not a large company or a system. I’m an architect who genuinely cares about your project and your outcomes.
