From Rainforests to Regional Architect
In the lush landscapes of Far North Queensland, where cyclones threaten and box jellyfish lurk, a young mind navigated natural wonders, setting the stage for a life immersed in the interplay of nature and design. Growing up amid the Big Wet and Dry seasons, computer whiz-kid and future architect honed an early fascination with the environment and technology.

Guided by his father, Barrie, an award winning, yet self-taught building designer, Dustin & Barrie established the Tree Frog Studios. A building design company specialising in tropical home design for Far North Queensland. Through the highs of winning design awards and the trials of economic downturns, Dustin’s path unfolded, shaping a destiny in architecture. Whilst employed on a short term contract to an Architectural company, Dustin found himself behind a computer overlooking Port Douglas Bay, discovering a world of Luxury Architectural Design. This short stint became a turning point, propelling Dustin to enrol at the University of Technology, Sydney.

Whilst studying at University, a personal tragedy struck. Dustin found himself delivering a eulogy at his father’s funeral, lost to cyclone flooding. After thanking Barrie for setting him on this journey, Dustin found solace in the belief that Barrie’s influence guides him still. Back at University, Dustin excelled earning scholastic awards and graduating with honours.
Working his way through University, Dustin transformed several offices’ computer systems, implementing the latest design technology and transforming the way they practiced architecture. In return Dustin received over a decade of traditional architectural mentoring, combining his history of project home design from Far North Queensland with detailed architectural design suited to the Mid-North Coast of NSW. Throughout this time, Dustin also pursued personal studies in Feng Shui, Eastern Philosophy, Self-Development … and kung fu.
On North Haven Beach, Dustin met his wife, Rachel, kindred spirit in interests and values. With the arrival of their daughter, Jade-Lily, the time had come to launch their own design practice. Each project, treated as his own, allowed Dustin to witness the transformative power of architecture in each of his client’s lives.

Combining his diverse interests and architectural expertise, Dustin cultivated a personal philosophy of Architectural Design. Technology, communication and collaboration became his tools for creating designs that resonated with his clients, elevating their lives and enhancing their well-being.
In 2022, Dustin Leaney was awarded NSW Building Design of the Year for the Tallwoods Chapel of Light. The ceremonial chapel stands as a testament to Dustin’s Design Principles, as community gathers to celebrate marriages, farewell loved ones, and share ceremonies together. The building incorporates timeless sacred geometry, a deep collaboration with the owners, artisans and craftsman, and state of the art technology including air conditioning systems, audio/video systems and hydraulic lifting glazed doors connecting the chapel to the natural environment of the Tallwoods Village landscape.
Dustin still pursues his personal studies and attempts to stay abreast of the latest technology to support his architecture practice. He is now an expert at navigating the local councils on the Mid-North Coast of NSW and developing designs that work with in harmony with the ideal environment of this region.
Dustin is also registered as a Building Design Practitioner, using his communication and collaboration skills to navigate the stringent regulations around higher density developments, including boarding houses, townhouses, apartments, and aged care facilities. He is one of the few sole-practitioners with this registration.
He is also focussed on creating affordable solutions for the housing crisis on the Mid-North Coast of NSW offering support to the Waterfall Way Community Lands Trust, and working with a large network of local consultants and builders.
Dustin is honoured by every client who chooses his support, and he continues to treat every project as if his own, through technology, communication and collaboration with his clients he aims to continue to elevate our lifestyles and enhance our well-being with well-considered architectural designs.

Dustin & his family live and work on Gumbayngirr Country, paying respect to its traditional custodians past, present, and future.
